Indonesia's downstream investment shifts toward bauxite and alumina

Jul. 24, 2026 - Indonesia's bauxite industry has emerged as the country's largest downstream mining investment sector in the second quarter of 2026, highlighting the government's continued drive to expand domestic mineral processing and strengthen the aluminium value chain.
According to data released by Indonesia's Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), investment in the bauxite value chain reached Rp40.1 trillion (approximately US$2.45 billion) during the second quarter, surpassing nickel-related investment of Rp29.4 trillion for the first time. During the first half of the year, cumulative downstream investment reached Rp53.8 trillion for bauxite and Rp71 trillion for nickel, indicating that while nickel remains the largest downstream sector overall, bauxite has become the fastest-growing investment segment in recent months.
The shift reflects Indonesia's long-term industrial strategy to increase domestic value addition following the implementation of the country's bauxite ore export ban in June 2023. Since then, investment has increasingly focused on alumina refineries and downstream aluminium processing projects rather than raw material exports. Several new alumina refineries have entered operation in recent years, while additional projects remain under construction, supporting continued growth in domestic bauxite consumption and strengthening Indonesia's position in the regional aluminium supply chain.
The continued expansion of Indonesia's bauxite processing and alumina refining capacity is expected to further expand the country's presence in regional and global alumina supply chains as more downstream projects enter operation. The investment is also likely to support demand for industrial furnace equipment and refractory materials used in high-temperature processing, including alumina calcination.
