Jun. 12, 2025 - Ghana is positioning itself as a global aluminium hub following a major step forward by the state-owned Ghana Integrated Aluminium Development Corporation (GIADEC). The company has secured six mining leases, unlocking access to an estimated 920 million tonnes of bauxite and enabling the development of a fully integrated aluminium value chain.
GIADEC CEO Reindorf Twumasi Ankrah described the move as a shift from exporting raw materials to building an industrial ecosystem that includes mining, refining, smelting, and downstream manufacturing. The initiative aligns with Ghana’s national “Reset Agenda,” which emphasizes industrialisation and sustainable resource use.
Investor interest is growing. GIADEC has signed an MoU with Emirates Global Aluminium to develop new mines, rail infrastructure, and expand Takoradi Port. It is also in advanced talks with Madison Alumina of the U.S. to establish a refinery and smelter with green technologies, including renewable energy and waste recycling.
Modernisation of the existing VALCO smelter is also underway, with plans to raise capacity from 50,000 to 300,000 metric tonnes per year.
To attract further investment, GIADEC is offering flexible partnership models, including credit-resource swaps, long-term off-take agreements, and joint ventures—ensuring both global participation and national value retention.
The integrated aluminium initiative is expected to create over 20,000 jobs while laying the foundation for Ghana’s transformation into a leading aluminium-producing nation.
